Could you please let us know of any local (Southern California) growers or nurserys that might sell, or be able to obtain the Thai Mango: Keo Savoy. We know we can find them in Florida but the shipping is very expensive. We would appreciate you help very much. Kanda and Dennis in San Fernando Valley. (818) 645-8852.
Thank you so much for any information or ideas. My wife and I may consider joining your organization.

    Ronni Kern · June 21, 2017 at 3:04 am

Alex, a friend at Tropical Mango Nursery in Phoenix, suggests that you “Should try Mimosa Nursery (323) 722-4543 they just got a big order from pine island nursery and I have seen keo savoy there in the past. Best person to talk to is Tom. “

Kanda and Dennis · June 22, 2017 at 10:35 pm

Thank you so much for the information. This particular Nursery said that they are out of this type of Mango Tree. They may get some in at the end of summer.
Kanda and I sure appreciate the feed back that we are receiving on this matter. I guess that we will just have to wait for the proper season and then try again. Thanks again. Dennis and Kanda

You should consider joining your local CRFG chapter. If you already have mango trees, you might find a member who could provide you with scion wood of your desired variety.

Do you know of any local Los Angeles growers or nurseries that might sell, or be able to obtain the following avocado trees: GEM, Gwen, Rincon, and Sir Prize? Thank you so much for your help.

Ellen Maisen · October 22, 2017 at 11:09 pm

Hey Chuyen Ngyuyen: Good news! Mauricio from Persea Tree Nursery in Fallbrook gave me permission to give out his phone number for GEM avocado trees. 951-440-1237. Please consider his nursery for Reed, GEM, Ettinger ( B cultivar), Hass and I know he has others but check with him for availability. We are very fortunate to have him here providing us with trees. He is a local alternative to Brokaw nursery up in Ventura county. http://www.brokawnursery.com/ they may be closer to you, depends on where you are, but they have a minimum order of 20 trees.
Mauricio is local to San Diego county growers and close enough to Los Angeles to be worth a trip down here. He brings knowledge from working in California and in other countries where avocados are grown commercially with farmers and scientists. I am a small farmer here in Valley Center and I can visit Mauricio’s high density grove and pick up trees . Very nice for us to have him here!

Great! Loved it!

Can anyone recommend a source in San Diego, CA where I can purchase a Babaco Papaya Vasconcellea X heiborni or other papaya with some cold tolerance.

Ellen Maisen · July 14, 2019 at 1:00 pm

Sorry I forgot about Exotica in Vista 760-724-9093. Papaya Tree nursery in Granada Hills has 6 varieties and Babacao, 818-363-3680, it’s in the San Fernando Valley past Los Angeles, Bonita Creek nursery might also have them. 619-422-2400

Maria · October 19, 2019 at 5:07 pm

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows a nursery where I can find yellow passion fruit in Los Angeles area.

Todd · December 5, 2019 at 3:32 pm

Anyone have a source for a Monachello lemon tree or budwood?

    Ronni Kern · February 17, 2020 at 6:09 pm

Do you have a problem with Mal Secco disease? If not, per UC Riverside, you would be better off grafting budwood of the Femminello which is available here

Todd · February 19, 2020 at 3:02 am

Not at all. My grandmother used to have a Monachello tree & it was one of my favorite lemons. I would just like to source a tree, so my wife can try some of her recipes using it.

    Ronni Kern · February 19, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Todd, you are apparently not in the huanglongbing quarantine area as we are here in California. But since the disease has decimated citrus in Florida and is endangering it in Texas and here (check out yesterday’s front page article in the LA Times (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-02-18/citrus-collection-uc-riverside-givaudan), anyone in those states is legally banned from exchanging citrus scion or budwood. You might want to be careful about where you obtain it. Maybe try someone in Italy?

      Mike Wagner · February 20, 2020 at 7:29 am

Are there members of your group who have experience with papaya? My specific interest is in the mountain papaya- Vasconcellea X heilbornii Babaco. I am looking for seeds and anyone who has grafted this species.

        Ronni Kern · February 20, 2020 at 8:19 am

Mike, a lot of us grow or grew babaco in Southern California thanks to Edgar Valdivia who popularized it and Charles Portney who provides little plants for many chapter raffles I have taken mine out (too many trees, not enough yard), but my recollection is that they are seedless and I can’t even imagine grafting one which may well be my failing. I know they do propagate easily, however, from trunk segments. Check with the LA chapter where both Edgar and Charles are active.

looking for nursery that’s sells dragon fruit plants.

          Betty Villanueva · June 29, 2020 at 9:44 pm

          Hello!
Did you ever find out more about Dragon fruit grows or who sells Dragon fruit?
          Thanks!

Does anyone where I can get a macadamia tree in Los Angeles or nearby counties? I have been trying to look for one for a very long time now.

    Ronni Kern · June 27, 2020 at 3:23 pm

Marilou, have you tried Mimosa Nursery in East LA? They are not the most reliable of nurseries but they do have an extensive stock and list macadamias on their site. Alex Silber, of Papaya Tree Nursery in Granada Hills also has macadamia trees on his site but you would have to check with him whether he has any on stock.

CG · August 9, 2020 at 4:23 pm

Any thoughts on who (which nurseries) would be the best to visit for 15+ gallon avocado trees in the SoCal area? I’d come down from NorCal with a truck for a small grove at my dad’s property.

    Ronni Kern · August 9, 2020 at 4:31 pm

I would head to Atkins Nursery in Fallbook. Quoting from Greg Alder’s invaluable site: “In the avocado epicenter of Fallbrook, you find Atkins Nursery. Established by Oliver Atkins, who long served as the chairman of the California Avocado Society’s Variety Committee, the nursery is now owned and run by Victor Gonzales, but propagating rare avocado varieties continues. They are truly one of a kind, offering varieties found at almost no other retail nursery, varieties such as Queen, Sharwil, Nabal, Gwen, Nimlioh, Ardith, and on and on…. Atkins doesn’t have a website, but they do have a Facebook page. The nursery’s address: 3129 Reche Rd, Fallbrook, CA 92028. Their phone number: (760) 728-1610. I would recommend calling before you go because their inventory of avocado varieties is always changing.”
