I’m having a really hard time getting fruit trees to grow, can you recommend anyone who can help? I have 2 areas I would like to plant a fruit orchard but am hesitant to start. I’ve planted many trees, all varieties plums persimmons avocados citrus lychee Logan peaches apples mango, jabodicaba and the list goes on… all dead.

I LOVE yangmei and would love to order a couple trees if the offer is still open.

I live in Elfin Forest.

Thanks,
Joanne

Joanne, I can’t imagine why you are having so much trouble growing fruit trees across the spectrum unless you have a terrible gopher problem. I would highly suggest joining your local chapter of CRFG, either North San Diego or San Diego and talk to the locals. Given your disastrous experiences, you might also want to seek out your local CDFA agents for help.

I know Bill would love to have you in the Yang Mei buy but they are notoriously difficult trees to grow in California and I would suggest you start with the “easier” trees like avos, citrus, apples, etc. first.

I am on the Escondido side and had similar problems. I believe it is fungus related, maybe because of the old avocado groves. I tried to treat trees for Phytophthora and Anthracnose and do better now with the trees you mentioned. You could also start the more resistant Pomegranates or Jujubes, they work fine for me, even with little water and care. For Mangoes I figured out that the Manila variety works ok here too. Good luck and don’t give up, best, Kay

Now I forgot, Guava works also very good, but they need some compost food and more water.
